For wine drinkers who are less familiar with the wines of the Old World, comprising countries in Europe and Eurasia that have been making wine for thousands of years, selecting a bottle can be intimidating.
For many of us, when selecting a bottle of wine, we want it to be good, interesting, and affordable. The Old World offers this in abundance. The key is having a guide to know what to look for.
With this in mind, I have developed a quick reference guide. This is a 3 page PDF file, with text large enough to read on a smartphone. It is organized by country, and identifies regions that might be commonly seen in a wine store or on a restaurant wine lists.
The vast majority of these will be affordably priced, although a few may exceed $20/bottle in retail (and in the event you see one lower than $20, it may be a bargain!)
The intent was to provide a tool that someone can quickly refer to, in a store or while reading a wine list, and be able to find something that meets the “good, interesting, affordable” criteria within a matter of minutes.
The pages are shown below. You can download it by subscribing to our mailing list.
I am happy to revise this and improve upon it, so if you have feedback, positive or negative, please let me know!
